Baker Tom

“Mom! Is it time yet?” I asked. “Tom, sweetie, there’s still a couple more hours to wait for!” My mom replied. “Yo, mom!” I heard a shout from upstairs. “Tell Tom that we got this in the bag, bro!”  “Don’t call me bro, Lenny!” My mom said sharply. “Don’t worry, Tom, we make the perfect baking team.” She assured me. Our whole family was extremely riled up at the thought of competing in “Piece of cake!”, the ultimate baking competition show. Finally, the clock struck 11:00. We could finally start driving to the studio! We got there at around eleven fifteen, which gave us enough time to set up. The judges came, and they told us that the show would start at around 12:00. The clock soon struck twelve, and the camera was pointed at us, as we heard the theme music playing. In the background, a voice said, “It’s Canada’s favorite show, “Piece of cake!” Today’s contestants are… The Millers! The Parkinsons! The Feldsons!” That was us! The voice continued, “And the Humphreys!” Then, the host approached us, and said, “Families, you will have two hours to create a family portrait cake, starting… now!” A loud siren blared. We finished ours as fast as we could. We finished ten minutes early. I looked at the portrait. Everyone looked exactly like us! I licked an extra piece of the brown whipped cream that was used to make me and my mom’s hair off of my finger. “Mmmm!” I exclaimed. It was delicious! However, the other bakers apparently didn’t understand the task, because they made up a family! Then, the ending siren blared. BEEEEEEEEEEP! It was so loud, my ears almost popped! The judges first tasted our vanilla cake. Elvira, one of the judges said, “Your cake is amazing! The whipped cream is velvety smooth, and the cake is smooth and moist! Well done!” I’ll cut to the chase: no, we weren’t off the episode, but the Humphreys were. Their cake was splotchy and very messy. Another one of the judges, John, said they put too much cacao powder in their cake. As a result, the cake tasted a bit bitter. “Bakers!” Judge Daniel continued. “You will have 1 hour to bake at least 4 cupcakes, and frost them to look like a rainbow!” That’s easy, I thought. After all, my brother and I almost always did that. The siren blared once more. Mom and dad baked the cupcakes, while Lenny and I prepared the frosting. I noticed the Millers and the Parkinsons stressing a bit. I heard one of them mutter “not enough time”, under their breath. Well, of course, I thought. Instead of working together, they’re doing it separately! By then, Lenny and I were done frosting. Suddenly, there was a loud BEEEEEEEEEEP! Yep, it was the siren, alright! One of the Parkinsons yelled, “Noooo!” Because they hadn’t finished in time, they were automatically out! That meant it was just us Feldsons, and the Millers. The tension in the air was really tight. Then, Judge Maria announced that we would have 4 hours to bake a Russian-style Napoleon cake! Mom and dad knew the recipe by heart. They gave us instructions on how to make the layers of the cake, while they made the cream, and the crumbs. We finished early again! I was so nervous, I didn’t get a chance to sneak a peek at the other team. This time, the judges didn’t taste the cake. They only huddled together, and whispered. Then they said, “We have decided! The winner is…” “CUT!” I heard someone say. I asked my mom what was happening. She said she didn’t know. She went to ask Judge Maria. Maria explained that it was a commercial break. Shortly after, we heard, “Action!” The judges announced the winners; it was the Feldsons! It was us! I jumped into my mom’s and my dad’s arms as a shower of confetti rained down on us. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
